Over the Hill Challenge Trails

Quick Answer

Over the Hill has 23 challenge trails: 18 unlock vehicles and five give cosmetics. The checklist identifies names, areas, and first rewards; it does not supply every checkpoint coordinate.

Over the Hill has 23 Challenge Trails across five areas. Eighteen unlock vehicles on first completion, while five give cosmetic rewards. Three vehicles are already owned from the start: The Protector, The Ding, and The Trailrat. You do not need to find a trail reward for those three.

The tables below identify all trail names and their first-completion rewards. They are a route-selection checklist, not turn-by-turn walkthroughs: exact start coordinates and every checkpoint position are not verified here.

Hermit TrailThe Burro40
Elizabeth Oath TrailKayaks and Kayaks (Bed)15
Windy Joe TrailThe Trail Burner25

Start here if you need The Burro or The Trail Burner. Elizabeth Oath Trail gives Kayaks instead of another vehicle. The area has three trails, so completing the two vehicle unlocks does not finish its whole trail checklist.

Fraser Research BoardwalkBoat and Boat (Bed)15
Windcall Gorge TrailThe Blast Wagon25
Elvis Rim TrailThe Polyana40
Bridal Veil Falls ClimbThe Brick25
Waddington Scree TrailDas Rust Ox40

Four of these five routes unlock vehicles; Fraser Research Boardwalk is the cosmetic exception. Windcall Gorge Trail is the target for The Blast Wagon. Its 20 checkpoints cover about 820 m, with 40 m of ascent and 20 m of descent. The listed straight-line distance to the finish is 478 m, so aiming directly at the endpoint is not a substitute for following checkpoints.

Blanshard Ridge TrailThe Bull v125

Read the full names when choosing between Midgar routes. Lower Midgar Trail unlocks Das Mammoth, whereas Midgar Ascent unlocks The Timberbox. Wakefield Switchback Climb is the cosmetic-reward trail. This area connects back to Gimli Ridge through a tunnel.

Shabah AscentThe Marshal40
La Cathédrale ClimbDixie Horn15
El Kalaa North AscentDas Wombat25
Tarfa AscentThe Boar25

The two El Kalaa ascents give different vehicles: South gives The Woodman and North gives Das Wombat. Shabah Ascent is the route for The Marshal. La Cathédrale Climb gives a Dixie Horn, so a missing vehicle in your garage is not a reason to repeat that particular climb.

The Tinny unlock route is Ukhtayn Route; check that full name when selecting the in-game activity. Four routes unlock vehicles and Djebel Rahmani Ascent provides pink Whip Lights. Aurès Mountains connects to Tassili n'Ajjer Desert through a tunnel.

Follow the checkpoint route to earn credit

A Challenge Trail is a sequence of checkpoints. The route can curve across terrain even when the start and finish are relatively close. Keep checking the next marker rather than treating the activity as a straight-line race.

Trails reset if you get too far from every checkpoint. The general map description lists abandonment distances of 100–120 m across trails; Windcall Gorge Trail specifically uses 100 m. Do not assume the larger number applies to every route. A detour for firmer ground can be sensible, but a wide excursion can abandon the challenge.

  1. Select the activity whose first-completion reward you actually want.
  2. Prepare your vehicle and tools before entering the start.
  3. Follow checkpoints and choose a workable driving line between them.
  4. Keep recovery attempts near the route where possible.
  5. Complete the final checkpoint and confirm the activity credits your driver.
  6. Record the vehicle or cosmetic after it appears as available.

Co-op completion is individual

You can help another player with an obstacle, but every driver must reach the required checkpoints. One friend finishing ahead does not automatically unlock the reward for everyone else. Stay aware of the slower vehicle's position when the group is attempting a trail together.

This also means a missing unlock can be a completion issue rather than a currency issue. Check your own checkpoint progress before looking for a purchase menu or assuming the vehicle requires Pebbles.

First rewards and repeat rewards are different

A first finish can unlock a vehicle or cosmetic and award Pebbles. The latest verified October 16 update fixed the failure to award Pebbles again when repeating Challenge Trails and Recovery Missions. Older launch-day advice that treats all completed trails as permanently exhausted currency sources is therefore outdated.

The first-finish amounts in the tables are not promised repeat payouts. The table lists the documented first-finish amounts for each route. Do not substitute them for verified repeat payouts or turn them into a promised earnings-per-minute figure.

Avoid mixing trails with other activities

Item Recovery jobs involve towing a wreck to a drop-off, while scenic points and crates are discoveries. Those objectives have their own rewards but do not add to the 23-trail checklist. If all vehicle rewards are collected, the remaining trails may be cosmetic ones rather than missing cars.

The five non-vehicle routes are Elizabeth Oath Trail, Fraser Research Boardwalk, Wakefield Switchback Climb, La Cathédrale Climb, and Djebel Rahmani Ascent. Checking these names is the quickest way to review why a full garage and a completed trail list are different goals.
