Over the Hill Multiplayer Fixes

Quick Answer

Update all players, check the configured room limit, and use the six-character code for a private room. The October 16 patch fixed some teleport loading issues; other failures need separate checks.

If Over the Hill multiplayer is not working, update the game on every player's PC, check the host's configured player limit and room privacy, and retry with a fresh session. The October 16 update fixed some multiplayer teleport infinite-loading cases. That is a reason to update first, not a guarantee that every connection error has the same cause.

No single confirmed fix covers an empty browser, a failed invitation, a full room, and a loading loop. Identify where joining fails before changing network settings. The checks below are diagnostic steps, not verified solutions for every launch-week fault.

Start with the current build and party size

The latest verified build in the October 17 snapshot is 26.10.16_57fb763. Allow Steam to finish updating, then restart the game. Ask the host and joining players to do the same so you are testing matching builds.

The standard maximum is four people including the host, and the host chooses Max Number of Players when creating a room. Check the actual setting as well as the current player count. A room configured for fewer players can be full before it reaches four; a full room is different from a broken connection.

If you use unofficial mods, check whether they change multiplayer requirements. The over the hill Unlimited listing explicitly says everyone needs the mod. Other listings describe single-player-only features. These descriptions do not establish that mismatched mod setups can communicate correctly.

Find the stage that fails

SymptomNext useful check
Invite does not appearSteam online state and overlay settings
Invite arrives but joining failsParty capacity, matching builds, and host session state
Long loading screen after joining or teleportingCurrent patch, then a fresh session
No rooms appearLocal connection and whether other players can see rooms
One player fails while others joinCompare that player's client and network with the working setup

The table helps separate symptoms. It does not establish that an empty browser must be a firewall problem, or that a loading screen proves strict NAT. Several different faults can look similar from the player's side.

Check private-room discovery and the room code

The host creates a room through Server Browser and chooses Privacy, Server Region, Max Number of Players, and Allow Mods. Public and private rooms can appear in the browser. The Hide Private Servers filter conceals private rooms, so check that filter if a known private session does not appear.

A private room requires its six-character room code. Use Join by Code with the code from the current host session. Seeing a private room in the list does not remove its code requirement, and an old code should not be assumed to identify a newly created session.

The room's Allow Mods setting is another configuration to compare when the group uses mods. It does not establish that every mod combination is compatible; follow any per-mod requirement that all participants share the setup.

Distinguish session rules from connection failures

What happensRule to check
A different-version warning appearsUpdate the game so joining players and host use matching builds
A kicked player cannot rejoinA kicked player is barred from that same session
Respawn is blocked while friends campWait until the camping players wake up
The group cannot start campingAll party members need to be close by
New areas do not unlock in a friend's roomJoining an area you have not unlocked prevents new area unlocks during that session; progress still saves

Do not treat these messages as evidence that your router is broken. In particular, repeatedly retrying a session after being kicked cannot override the session rule. Waiting for friends to wake up addresses the stated respawn condition without changing network settings.

Check the Steam overlay for invite problems

If invitations are the failing stage, inspect the Steam Overlay setting and confirm Steam is online. Restart Steam after changing a setting, then ask for a fresh invitation rather than continuing to click an old one.

Try a newly created session after both players restart. This is a reversible diagnostic check: if the new session works, you have a working route into co-op without needing to attribute the earlier failure to a specific server or protocol.

Verify installed files

  1. Open the Steam Library and select Over the Hill.
  2. Open Properties, then Installed Files.
  3. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Let Steam finish the check and download any replacements.
  5. Restart the game and repeat the same joining attempt.

Verification can repair missing or damaged local files. A successful check does not prove the network is healthy, and it does not confirm that the other players have updated. Keep those checks separate.

Narrow down a connection-specific failure

If the game and Steam are current, compare results with another host. Check whether all players fail to join the original host or whether only one joining player has trouble. Record that distinction before making several settings changes.

A wired connection can be a useful comparison when Wi-Fi is unstable. If a proxy or routing tool is active, test the ordinary connection as a separate attempt. These comparisons help identify whether the result changes with the connection; they do not establish that a particular paid booster is necessary.

Do not disable the firewall or add guessed port-forwarding rules. Exact game-specific ports and a verified router fix are not established here. If you review an application's firewall entry, keep the change limited to the game rather than weakening protection for the whole computer.

Prepare a useful issue report

If you still cannot join, keep the error text, build number, failure stage, configured player limit, privacy setting, player count, and whether a different host worked. Note any active mods and whether a clean setup changed the result. Those details distinguish an invite problem from a post-join loading problem far more clearly than "multiplayer broken."

Progress is individual in co-op. If the session works but an objective is missing, check whether your own driver reached its checkpoints. A teammate finishing a trail does not automatically complete it for everybody, so missing reward credit is not by itself evidence of a connection fault.
