All Five Over the Hill Maps

Quick Answer

Over the Hill has five handcrafted areas: Emerald Lake, Gimli Ridge, Asgard Mountain, Tassili n'Ajjer Desert, and Aurès Mountains. This guide covers map structure, not every collectible coordinate.

The Over the Hill map is divided into five handcrafted areas across two regions. The Valhallas in Canada contains Emerald Lake, Gimli Ridge, and Asgard Mountain. Algeria contains Tassili n'Ajjer Desert and Aurès Mountains. Each area is about 4 km by 4 km; the game does not use one giant continuous map or procedurally generated terrain.

Choose the area containing your target before planning a journey. A vehicle, crate, animal, or trail with a familiar name may belong to another area. This page explains the map structure and activity counts; it does not provide individually verified coordinates for every collectible.

These categories describe different tasks. Reaching a scenic point is not the same as completing a challenge trail, and a cabin discovery does not mean nearby crates have been opened. Keep a separate checklist for each activity type if you are tracking a region manually.

Read discovery markers before chasing completion

Cabins are visible on the in-game map before you discover the surrounding ground. Reaching a cabin for the first time clears fog within 400 m, reveals some nearby places, and awards 10 Pebbles. Cabins also fully repair your vehicle and refill tool slots, making them useful staging points for a route.

Crates, scenic points, trails, and recovery jobs remain concealed by fog until you drive within 200 m. An empty-looking patch of map therefore does not establish that there is nothing to find there. Work outward from a cabin, check the nearby paths, and distinguish an undiscovered activity from a completed one.

The Mechanic is a separate destination, with one in each area. He sells upgrades and repairs vehicles; the first visit pays 10 Pebbles. When you need to prepare for an obstacle, use the correct area's Mechanic rather than assuming a cabin offers the complete upgrade menu.

Emerald Lake: opening routes and first vehicle goals

Emerald Lake contains six cabins, 18 crates, two scenic points, three challenge trails, and one recovery job. Its listed places range from 50 m to 302 m elevation. Clark Watchtower is the highest listed scenic point at 221 m, while the Mechanic is at 159 m.

The three trails have different first-completion rewards: Hermit Trail unlocks The Burro, Windy Joe Trail unlocks The Trail Burner, and Elizabeth Oath Trail gives Kayaks. Elizabeth Lake Recovery gives a Canoe. Select the activity by its reward if your purpose is unlocking a particular item rather than increasing a completion counter.

Pavilion Lake Cabin, Black Bear's Den, Elizabeth Lake Cabin, Birch Grove Hut, Malachite Lodge, and Brew Hut form the area's cabin checklist. The exit named Ferry to the Ridge leads to Gimli Ridge. Moving onward does not turn the first area's unfinished crates into completed objectives; keep its checklist available if you plan to return.

Gimli Ridge: wetlands, five trails, and the mountain connection

Gimli Ridge has nine cabins, 16 crates, eight scenic points, five challenge trails, and two recovery jobs. Listed places range from 23 m to 504 m elevation. Mímisbrunnr Lake Overlook is the highest listed scenic point at 441 m, while the Mechanic is at 34 m.

The vehicle rewards here are The Blast Wagon from Windcall Gorge Trail, The Polyana from Elvis Rim Trail, The Brick from Bridal Veil Falls Climb, and Das Rust Ox from Waddington Scree Trail. Fraser Research Boardwalk is the fifth trail and gives a Boat rather than a vehicle. Nerthus Marsh Recovery gives a Ferry Horn, while Glasir Wood Recovery gives an Expedition Tent.

Use the Tunnel to Asgard Mountain for the mountain area. The return connection to Emerald Lake is named Ferry to the Mountain. Read the destination attached to a transition instead of inferring it from the word "Mountain" alone; the similarly themed Canadian names can otherwise send you toward the wrong checklist.

Asgard Mountain: higher elevations and expedition unlocks

Asgard Mountain has nine cabins, 15 crates, eight scenic points, five challenge trails, and two recovery jobs. Listed places range from 80 m to 993 m. Heimdall Eye is the highest listed scenic point at 972 m, and the Mechanic is at 506 m.

Its trail rewards include The Timberbox from Midgar Ascent, The Grand Woodman from Asulkan Lake Highline, Das Mammoth from Lower Midgar Trail, and The Bull v1 from Blanshard Ridge Trail. Wakefield Switchback Climb gives the Bald Eagle Horn. The recovery tasks are Midgar Way Recovery for Skis & Snowboards and Upland Carmanah Recovery for a Hot Dog cosmetic.

The Tunnel to Gimli Ridge is the area's listed connection. If you are pursuing Das Mammoth, the map objective is Lower Midgar Trail, not every trail with Midgar in its name. The distinction matters because Midgar Ascent has a different vehicle reward.

Tassili n'Ajjer Desert: the largest crate checklist

Tassili n'Ajjer Desert contains 10 cabins, 21 crates, 17 scenic points, five challenge trails, and seven recovery jobs. Its listed places range from 18 m to 237 m. Buried Giants II reaches 237 m, and the Mechanic is at 55 m.

The four vehicle trails are El Kalaa South Ascent for The Woodman, Shabah Ascent for The Marshal, El Kalaa North Ascent for Das Wombat, and Tarfa Ascent for The Boar. La Cathédrale Climb gives a Dixie Horn. North and South are part of the El Kalaa trail names; checking the full name avoids completing the wrong ascent for your intended car.

The area's seven recovery jobs are Tassili n'Idir, Chebka North, Chebka Gateway, Northeast Hamada, Grand Oasis, Lakebed, and Chebka Rim. This is a much longer recovery checklist than the other areas, so do not use a uniform two-jobs-per-map assumption. The Tunnel to the Aurès Mountains connects it to Algeria's other area.

Aurès Mountains: the second Algerian area

Aurès Mountains contains nine cabins, 16 crates, eight scenic points, five challenge trails, and two recovery jobs. Listed places range from 5 m to 420 m. Southwest Overlook is at 420 m, and the Mechanic is at 43 m.

The Tinny comes from Ukhtayn Route, Das Lynx from Mahrouqa West Track, Roamer from Kalaa Ulya Track, and The Cumbre from Jazira Ascent. Djebel Rahmani Ascent gives pink Whip Lights. High Mahrouqa Recovery gives a Rear Tube Bumper, while North Jazira Recovery gives a Rubber Chicken Horn.

The Tunnel to the Desert returns to Tassili n'Ajjer Desert. The region name Algeria describes both maps, so use the full area name when recording unfinished locations or sharing a target with friends.

Distinguish fixed activities from possible spawns

Crates are fixed discoveries that award a cosmetic and five Pebbles when opened. A scenic point pays 15 Pebbles. Challenge trails follow checkpoint routes and offer first-finish rewards; recovery jobs require towing a wreck to a drop-off and pay 25 Pebbles plus a cosmetic.

Meteorite dots represent possible landing spots, not a meteorite waiting at every dot. Likewise, an animal spawn marker is a possible place to find a species, not a promise that it will be standing there when you arrive. Plan these searches separately from fixed crate collection. A map full of possible wildlife locations cannot be used as a count of living animals currently present.

Check category totals across the full game

Across all five areas, the fixed activity checklist contains 43 cabins, 86 crates, 43 scenic points, 23 challenge trails, and 14 recovery jobs. Compare the same category across areas rather than adding every kind of marker into one completion figure.

For a cabin-focused visit to Asgard Mountain, the names are Crossroads Shelter, Shaughnessy Cabin, Eagle Perch Cabin, Rock Cradle Cabin, Similkameen Lodge, Twin Pools Cabin, Mjoll Basin Lodge, Gods' Rest, and Ridgeline Rest. These names identify destinations, but their order here does not imply an efficient driving loop or establish the road between them.

Build a route around the outcome you need

  1. Pick one area and one activity type before driving.
  2. Use a cabin as a preparation point, repairing the vehicle and refilling tools.
  3. Decide whether the target is a fixed place, a checkpoint activity, a recovery route, or a possible spawn.
  4. Check the complete trail or recovery name when pursuing a reward.
  5. Record the completed target after the game credits it, then choose the next nearby objective.
  6. Recheck unfinished activity types before leaving through a ferry or tunnel.

Weather and daylight change the journey even though the underlying maps are handcrafted. A route that was easy to read earlier may be harder to see in rain or darkness. Keep the map objective separate from the immediate driving line: knowing which trail to complete still leaves you to choose a workable path across the ground.
