How to Join Friends

Quick Answer

Have the host create a room in the Server Browser. For a private room, enter its six-character code through Join by Code. Check Hide Private Servers and game versions; four players is the total limit.

Over the Hill supports online play for up to four people total: one host and up to three friends. The host creates a room in the Server Browser. For a private room, share its 6-character room code and have guests use Join by Code.

For a planned trip, choose a host, make sure everyone is using the current PC version and look for the host’s session through the available multiplayer interface. Console releases are planned for 2027; the confirmed current release is Steam PC.

Agree on a host and a group size

Four is the total player limit. A host plus four guests would be five people and exceeds it. Arrange the group before creating a session so that a full room is not mistaken for an invite failure.

The convoy illustrates cooperative travel, not the multiplayer lobby interface.

The game is designed around cooperative driving and recovery. Friends can help with obstacles, but the illustrated convoy does not show the lobby interface or prove how a particular invite was sent. Use the interface in your current build to create or discover the session.

Local co-op is not confirmed as an available alternative. The developer says it is not feasible at the moment, and the Steam release lists online co-op. Plan for online participants rather than assuming that several people can join from one screen.

Create the room and join by code

  1. Have the host create a room in the Server Browser.
  2. Set Max Number of Players within the four-person limit, then choose Privacy, Server Region and Allow Mods for the group.
  3. For a private room, give friends its 6-character room code.
  4. Have guests choose Join by Code and enter that code. Public rooms can be found through the Server Browser.
  5. Confirm everyone has entered before starting the route.

Both public and private rooms appear in the Server Browser. Hide Private Servers removes private rooms from the list; check that filter if the host’s private room seems absent. A private room still requires its code even when it is visible.

Server Region offers Automatic and named regions. Agree on the host and region before joining; a region selection alone does not guarantee that every participant’s connection will be stable.

Check the game version before repeated join attempts

The verified October 16 build is 26.10.16_57fb763. It includes fixes for some multiplayer teleport infinite-loading problems. All participants should update before diagnosing a launch-week issue, while keeping the scope of that fix clear: a teleport-loading repair is not proof that every lobby problem is solved.

A room running a different version produces a message asking you to update. Compare the versions used by the host and guests. Restart after an update and attempt the session again. If the invite or browser still fails, note whether the host’s room can be seen, whether joining begins, and whether the failure happens only after loading.

Those are different stages. A session that cannot be found and a session that starts loading but never finishes should not be described as the same symptom. This page does not attribute every failure to a specific network service or guarantee that a commercial connection tool fixes it.

Make sure each friend earns their own progress

Progress is tracked individually. Every player must reach an objective checkpoint personally to complete it, even when friends help them get there. A successful convoy trip therefore includes moving every driver through the required checkpoint, not only sending the lead vehicle ahead.

Progress and completed objectives carry between single-player and multiplayer. That lets you continue your own progression across the two modes. It does not establish a host-owned shared save, automatic unlock sharing, host migration or a persistent world that remains online after the host leaves.

Before ending an objective, let each player confirm their own completion. If one driver needs recovery help, helping them reach the checkpoint is directly relevant; another driver’s completion does not substitute for it.

Respect the session’s area and recovery restrictions

Joining a room in an area you have not unlocked does not unlock new areas during that session, although progress is still saved. Do not use joining a friend as a guaranteed shortcut through your own area unlocks.

All party members must be close together to camp. If your friends are already camping, wait until they wake up before respawning. A player kicked from a room cannot rejoin that same session; another invitation or the same code does not remove that session restriction.

Keep the platform promise separate from today’s setup

The developer FAQ confirms cross-play at a headline level, but it does not give a platform-combination matrix or a cross-platform invite procedure. Steam PC is the current confirmed release, while PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 ports are planned for 2027.

That means a console announcement or store preview is not evidence that your console friend can join the current Steam session today. This page does not invent an account-linking requirement, a cross-platform friend code or a launch date for a specific console store.

Recover a failed joining attempt with clear information

Ask the host to confirm the room still exists and has capacity. Check that the players are online and updated, then try a fresh session. Steam file verification is another general check if the local installation may be incomplete: use the game’s Properties, open Installed Files and run the integrity check.

These checks are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed cures. Account-specific invitation behavior and any service-side outage remain unconfirmed here. If the problem persists, keep the host and guest versions, the stage where joining fails and any error wording together; those details describe the problem more usefully than repeatedly changing unrelated options.
