First check the handbrake and select Low Range for difficult terrain. If the vehicle still cannot move, use the winch or the tools in the radial menu. An overturned car needs to be put upright; a traction problem may benefit from wooden planks. If the available tools are missing or insufficient, select a discovered cabin on the map to respawn.
The useful first decision is what is preventing movement. A car on its roof, a car bogged down in mud, and a car unable to climb a slope do not call for exactly the same response. Stop treating every stationary vehicle as a reason to hold the accelerator longer.
Check the driving state before deploying equipment
Make sure the handbrake is not the reason the car is refusing to move. For rough ground or an uphill section, change to Low Range. The game uses Low Range for better traction on difficult terrain and High Range for faster travel on regular ground.
Look at the route around the car as well. If there is a nearby approach that avoids the obstacle, repositioning can be more useful than continuing to attack the same line. This does not require buying a new vehicle or another performance tier before you know what went wrong.

Use an anchor that pulls you toward usable ground
When you need the winch, look for an attachment object such as a tree. The object closest to the center of the camera is the one the winch targets. Camera position therefore matters when several objects overlap.
- Look around the stuck vehicle and choose the direction in which you want to recover.
- Select the attachment point on the vehicle.
- Center the intended anchor object in the camera.
- Select that object to attach the winch.
- Use the connection to work the vehicle back onto a usable route.
If the automatic selection is not giving you enough control, use the manual winch option. Do not repeatedly accept the wrong anchor when you can change the camera view or select the connection manually.
A longer-range winch upgrade can expand the set of anchors you can reach. It does not remove the need to choose a useful direction or make every visible object a valid anchor.
Match the recovery tool to the situation
Open the radial menu to inspect the Tools you actually have available. The game provides recovery options for being stuck, bogged down, or overturned. For an upside-down car, use the option that flips the vehicle upright and repositions it nearby.
Wooden planks serve a different purpose. A set places two planks around the vehicle and can help cross a gap or gain traction on rough ground. Use them when creating a usable surface is the problem, rather than expecting them to replace an upright recovery for a car lying on its roof.
| Situation | First useful action |
|---|---|
| Struggling on rough ground or a climb | Check handbrake and use Low Range |
| Stuck with a suitable anchor nearby | Attach the winch |
| Car has overturned | Use an upright recovery tool |
| Gap or poor contact surface blocks progress | Consider wooden planks |
| No adequate tools or recovery route | Respawn at a discovered cabin |
Do not assume every tool is already in the vehicle. Carrying capacity is limited by tool slots, and tool-slot upgrades allow you to carry more. Check the actual radial menu rather than planning a recovery around equipment you have not brought.
Use a cabin when recovery stops being practical
Open the map and select a cabin you have discovered. Cabins provide respawn locations and can move you out of an otherwise unsuccessful recovery attempt. A random unexplored cabin icon is not the same as an already available respawn point.
Reaching a cabin repairs the vehicle and restores the tools already equipped on it. Cabins also reveal nearby points of interest and unlock fast travel. This helps prepare another attempt, but it does not mean you receive a tool that was never equipped.
The Mechanic is another respawn option: select its icon on the area map. At the Mechanic, inspect the tools fitted to your vehicle before returning to the obstacle. Use the discovered-cabin option when it is the available retreat, or the Mechanic when you need to change your equipment.
There is no need to turn a failed recovery into a test of endurance. If the winch cannot reach a useful anchor and your tools do not solve the position, use the cabin and take a different approach. This guide does not assume a specific penalty, charge, or preservation rule for an unfinished objective.
Reduce the chance of repeating the same mistake
Before returning to the obstacle, decide what will be different: the approach, gear range, equipment, or vehicle. Return to High Range once you are back on ordinary ground and want travel speed. Turn on the vehicle's headlights when navigating at night.
Friends can assist with difficult terrain, but multiplayer progress is tracked individually. Each player still needs to reach their own trail checkpoints. Getting a friend's vehicle through a section does not by itself finish your objective, so recover in a way that lets you continue your own route as well.
