Over the Hill Player Limit

Quick Answer

Over the Hill supports one to four players: you and up to three friends online. The host counts toward the four-player cap. Standard launch play has no local split-screen co-op.

Over the Hill supports up to four players in an online session: you and up to three friends. The host counts as one of the four. You can also play alone, and a group does not need to fill every slot before exploring.

The standard game does not provide local split-screen co-op. Its multiplayer focus is online cooperation, with individual progress that carries between single-player and multiplayer.

Count the host inside the party limit

GroupFits the standard online limit
One player aloneYes, single-player is supported
You and one friendYes
You and two friendsYes
You and three friendsYes, four total
You and four friendsNo, five exceeds the standard cap

The phrase "up to three friends" describes companions joining you, not the total session size. It does not mean three people overall, and it does not mean four guests in addition to a host.

What players do together

Several off-road vehicles travelling through a Canadian mountain landscape

Co-op lets you explore the same landscapes, attempt off-road routes, and help each other overcome terrain. Winches and planks support recovery and crossing difficult ground. The group size is a limit on participants in the online session, not a requirement that everybody choose the same car or stay on one route.

You can approach the session as a shared exploration trip rather than a race. Agree on the next objective before moving if some friends want vehicle unlocks while others are stopping for photographs or searching for collectibles.

Checkpoints and objectives remain individual

Each player must reach the required checkpoint personally. A teammate can help pull your vehicle through an obstacle, but their successful finish does not automatically complete your objective.

For a trail that unlocks a car, keep every interested driver moving through the checkpoint route. If one person falls behind, check their own progress before the group leaves for another map. Cooperation helps you reach the objective; it does not replace the completion condition.

Completed objectives and progress are saved for the individual and carry between solo play and multiplayer. You do not need to reserve every exploration session for a full four-person group to keep progressing.

Local co-op and platform expectations

Local split-screen is not available in the standard launch setup. Do not plan a four-person couch session from the online-player count alone. "Four players" describes online cooperation, not four controllers sharing one screen.

As of the October 17, 2026 game snapshot, the confirmed released version is Steam PC. Console versions are planned for 2027. Announced console support should not be treated as a way to add console friends to a playable launch-week session today.

Larger-party mods change the baseline

An unofficial mod listing named over the hill Unlimited claims to raise the cap to 16 players and says every participant needs the mod. That claim is separate from the game's standard four-person limit, and its actual stability or compatibility has not been verified here.

If you want the supported group size without a shared mod setup, plan for four people total. If a fifth friend cannot join an already full group, the standard capacity explains that result; it is not by itself evidence of a connection fault.
